Model assumptions and limits

The upfront cost compounds from today. Annual ongoing costs compound from each year end at a constant return; resale is deducted at the target date. The result is floored at zero and does not show gains when resale exceeds modeled costs. No financing, taxes, investment fees, inflation adjustment or personal enjoyment value is included. This is an opportunity-cost comparison, not a budget or affordability verdict. Returns and outcomes are not guaranteed.

HOW TO USE THE TRADEOFF

The future value is a price tag—not an automatic reason to say no.

A pool, renovation, vehicle, trip, or other major purchase can be worth doing. The model makes the complete wealth cost visible so the decision can reflect both enjoyment and financial capacity.

What does the result include?

The future value of the upfront cost, the compounded effect of ongoing costs, and any resale value retained at the selected date.

When is the purchase financially durable?

Core reserves remain intact, high-interest debt is controlled, retirement stays on trajectory, and the ongoing cost fits normal cash flow without borrowing.

What should not be counted as justification?

Uncertain appreciation, hoped-for bonuses, tax deductions without calculation, or money already assigned to emergencies and near-term obligations.
